Having Tuition Classes
Many students nowadays have tuition for more than one subject. Based on a survey conducted by the Department of Statistics in 2017, the tuition industry has increased to a $1.4 billion industry. 8 in 10 parents send their children for tuition. In this post, we shall examine whether tuition is necessary for students nowadays.
Tuition is seen as necessary due to:
1. School classes ratio can be as big as 40:1
In such a big class, weak students may not be able to benefit from classes at school as the teacher is unable to attend to everyone and provide individualised teaching. They may be also shy to ask questions and as this continues, their foundation is not set right. They may also lose confidence and have no motivation to continue learning in class.
This is when tuition can help. By having a 1 to 1 or small group class, the student is able to receive customised learning and the tutor is able to work on his weaker topics and set his foundation right.
On the other hand, students with higher capabilities may find the class pace slower as the teacher has to consider the weaker students. Having additional tuition class may help to push them further if the tutor is able to spot commonly tested questions or even provide them with challenging questions. Few of my students have commented their class pace was quite slow and they couldnt finish the syllabus on time. Our tuition classes will help students to finish the syllabus on time regardless of their school pace.
2. Both parents are working and have no time to guide the child
With more dual income families, both parents may not have time to supervise and help their children’s studies. They also may have lost touch on the O level syllabus due to a significant period of time and changes in the syllabus. Getting help from experienced tutors would be a good move as they are always in touch with the syllabus. Parents can work hand in hand with the tutors by providing support for the child.
3. Unmotivated students
Some students may not be self disciplined to complete their homework or do self revision. They may get complacent and not know what they are still lacking in. With the increasing use of phones and laptops, many are also spending too much time on social media. Having tuition may be a way to force them to learn and help to make sure they attempt their homework and to find out their weak topics. It can also help to prepare them for their examinations.
However, not every student may benefit from having tuition. We explore the disadvantages of having tuition below.
Disadvantages of Having Tuition
1.Having too much workload
With multiple subjects and CCAs to cope, students find themselves less time to complete their school homework. Many also have multiple tuition for various subjects and thus may not have enough time to complete the additional homework from tuition classes. Students may feel stressed and burn out and sleep late, affecting their performance in school or in examinations.
2. Finding the wrong tutor / type of tuition
Finding the right tutor may be a hit and miss. Parents may source tutors from online or agents or tuition centres. However, not all tutors teaching style may suit every student’s learning. For example, some students may not be suitable for online lessons. They are easily distracted by their phones and do not pay attention to the lessons. This can cause a waste of resources and extra cost by the parent.
In addition, some students may not suit group tuition as they are shy to ask questions and clarify doubts.
With all above, the pros of tuition may outweigh the cons if parents find the correct tutor for their child and work hand in hand with the tutor.
